Riccardo Giacconi, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, has been selected as the 2024–25 recipient of the Harvard Film Study Center-LEF Foundation Fellowship.
Justin Hollander, professor in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at the School of Arts and Sciences, Karen Jacobsen, Henry J. Leir Professorship in Global Migration at The Fletcher School, were awarded a grant from the United States Agency for International Development under its Program for Local and Urban Sustainability to continue their ongoing collaboration with Makerere University on urban development/pollution challenges in informal settlements in Kampala, Uganda. Numerous Tufts students have been a part of this work and three graduate students, Elijah Mensah, AG24, Kyle Hammond, A25, AG26, and Sonya Sternlieb, AG23, travelled to Uganda last year. Also, Hollander, Jacobsen, Sternlieb, and Abay Yimere, affiliate at The Fletcher School, alongside colleagues from Woodwell Climate Research Center, authored “Urban policy responses to climate hazards in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia” in the journal City and Environment Interactions.
Sunah Hyun, senior researcher, Peter Levine, associate dean for academic affairs and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Diane Ryan, associate dean for programs and administration, all at Tisch College, were awarded a 2024 Capacity-Building Grant from Wake Forest University. This grant will enable the team to enhance existing evaluation tools within higher education that assess students’ civic character.
Melinda Latour, associate professor of music, was awarded the Morris D. Forkosch Book Prize for Best First Book in Intellectual History for her book, The Voice of Virtue: Moral Song and the Practice of French Stoicism, 1574-1652, published by Oxford University Press in 2023.
Tareina Rogers, D25, received the Audacity to Dream Leadership Award from the National Dreamers and Achievers Foundation. The award celebrates those who are not afraid to envision a better future and take decisive actions to bring that vision to life. Through her groundbreaking work in leadership roles across organized dentistry and public-health endeavors, Rogers has not only set ambitious goals but has also inspired others to challenge boundaries and pursue their own dreams with courage and conviction, the foundation said.
Oxana Shevel, associate professor of political science at the School of Arts and Sciences, was elected president of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. The Slavic Studies Association in its various incarnations has been the leading international scholarly organization devoted to the region since 1948.
Yolanda Smith, executive director of public safety, was awarded the Civil Rights Law Enforcement Leadership by Action Award from the National Organization of Law Enforcement Executives in New Orleans.
Noah Stiegler, E25, recently won a Tau Beta Pi Scholarship. This year, 253 engineering students across the country were selected for the prestigious honor from a large pool of candidates. Awardees are chosen for their high levels of scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise in making future contributions to the engineering profession.
Natasha Warikoo, Lenore Stern Professor in Social Sciences, was named a co-winner of the Award for Public Sociology presented by the American Sociological Association’s International Migration Section and a co-awardee of the Public Sociology Award (Post Tenure Award) from the Eastern Sociological Society.

Jenny Aker, research professor, and Melita Sawyer, program director of the Academic Support Center, both at The Fletcher School, co-authored a VoxDev article “What do we know about literacy learning in adulthood?”
Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, the Julia A. Okoro Professor of Black Maternal Health, is quoted in a Bloomberg article titled “As Rural Hospitals Shutter Maternity Wards, Urban Ones Follow.” Amutah-Onukagha warns that the recent maternity ward closures in rural and suburban areas directly contribute to maternal morbidity.
Denise Bates, dean of University College and professor of history in the School of Arts and Sciences, was part of a group of historians interviewed for the Journal of American History podcast as a follow-up to a panel titled Neither the One nor the Other: The Native South in a Black and White World after 1900 presented at the 2024 Annual Meeting for the Organization of American Historians in New Orleans.
Jessica Bates, associate dean of academic and student affairs for University College, recently co-authored an article in the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education titled “Cultivating Critical Thinking Skills: A Pedagogical Study in a Business Statistics Course.”

Thomas Qitong Cao, assistant professor of technology policy at The Fletcher School, is quoted in a Financial Times article about Chinese perceptions of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Sean Cash, Bergstrom Foundation Professor in Global Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, shared information in The Christian Science Monitor about how a tight labor supply during the pandemic has driven up food prices.
Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at The Fletcher School, profiled Kamala Harris’s record on AI in an opinion piece for Foreign Policy. On the Somewhere on Earth: The Global Tech Podcast Chakravorti explained Kamala Harris’s approach to AI policy.
Rishabh Chaudhary, graduate student, Luisa Chiesa, professor of mechanical engineering, Robert White, associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Zijia Zhao, Ph.D. candidate, all at the School of Engineering, alongside colleagues from other institutions, authored research titled “Modeling and characterization of gas coupled ultrasonic transducers at low pressures and temperatures and implications for sonic anemometry on Mars” in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. Articles about the findings of the research appeared in Popular Science and EurekAlert from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Additionally, White spoke with Across Acoustics, an American Acoustical Society podcast, about his work developing a Mars Sonic Anemometer.
Michael Cohen, instructor, Christopher Preble, affiliate, and Monica Duffy Toft, professor of international politics, all at The Fletcher School, coauthored the Foreign Affairs article “America’s Missed Chance in Afghanistan.” Cohen, Preble, and Toft investigated flaws in American war planning for The Fletcher School’s Center for Strategic Studies’ Afghanistan Assumptions Project, and this essay draws on the project’s findings. Additionally, Toft was one of 10 scholars interviewed for a Responsible Statecraft article.
Laura Corlin, an associate professor of public health and community medicine at the School of Medicine, was quoted in an Indian Express article “Scientists keep finding heavy metals in dark chocolate. Should you worry?” New research shows dark chocolate may contain heavy metals, and Corlin, who was not involved in the research, advises moderation, noting small amounts are safe, but frequent consumption could add risk.
Tom Dannenbaum, associate professor of international law at The Fletcher School, authored “Unforced Error: Article 124 and the Regrettable Caveat to Ukraine’s Proposed Ratification of the ICC Statute” in Just Security. Dannenbaum also authored an article in D+C titled “How ICC is relevant in civil war in Sudan’s Darfur region.”
Mary Davis, senior associate vice provost for education and associate professor in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, authored a new book, Jobs, Health, and the Meaning of Work. Read more about the book on Tufts Now.
David Delvalle, former Tufts University Prison Initiative of the Tisch College of Civic Life (TUPIT) student and Tufts junior, comments on how TUPIT impacted the culture at MCI-Concord, in The Bay State Banner.
Alex de Waal, executive director of the World Peace Foundation at The Fletcher School, wrote the BBC article “Famine hits Sudan as peace talks fall short yet again” and was quoted in a BBC article titled “Will more stars boycott Dubai after rapper Macklemore?” de Waal also authored the Think Global Health article “The Deep Imprints of Gaza’s Humanitarian Catastrophe.”
Elizabeth Dowling, research professor in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development, Erin Kelly, professor of philosophy at The Fletcher School, and Jonathan Tirrell, director of the Generous Listening and Dialogue Center and research associate professor at the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, attended the Listening and Leading: The Art and Science of Peace, Resilience, and Transformational Justice conference in Kigali, Rwanda. The conference, co-hosted by Aegis Trust, Tufts University, and the University of Rwanda, commemorated the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. It brought together more than 400 scholars, practitioners, policymakers, dignitaries, religious leaders, artists, and community peacebuilders to share lessons and envision a just and peaceful future. Aegis Trust announced the launch of a global center for peacebuilding, the Is?ko Peace Institute, planned to include education, research, and memory work to promote peace and end identity-based violence. Dowling, Kelly, and Tirrell are continuing a research-practice partnership between Tufts and Aegis Trust intended to develop evaluation tools and a theory of change and for the Aegis Trust Peace and Values Education programs, to be amplified and scaled through the Is?ko Peace Institute. The partnership between Tufts University and Aegis Trust, including the hosting of the Listening and Leading conference, is supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation.
Daniel Drezner, Distinguished Professor of International Politics at The Fletcher School, authored the Foreign Affairs article “How Everything Became National Security” and appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss this essay. Drezner was also quoted in a Financial Times article titled “How national security has transformed economic policy.”
Johanna Dwyer, professor of medicine at Tufts Medical Center, co-authored an American Society on Aging article titled “Food Is Medicine.”
David Ekbladh, professor of history in the School of Arts and Sciences, wrote The Conversation article “No, the world isn’t heading toward a new Cold War–it’s closer to the grinding world order collapse of the 1930s.”

Kerri Greenidge, Mellon Associate Professor in the Department of Race, Colonialism and Diaspora, had her book The Grimkes: The Legacy of Slavery in an American Family selected as one of three finalists for this year’s Frederick Douglass Book Prize from the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University.
Kevin Grossklaus, affiliate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, John McElearney, graduate research assistant, T. Pan Menasuta, Ph.D. candidate, and Thomas Vandervelde, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, all at the School of Engineering, authored “Determination of the Complex Refractive Index of GaSb1—xBix by Variable-Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry” in the journal Physica Status Solidi (a). Phil Haydon, the Annetta and Gustav Grisard Professor of Neuroscience at the School of Medicine, sailed to first place in the double-handed division at the 53rd Newport Bermuda Race. Haydon sailed for his charity, Sail for Epilepsy, which he launched in 2019 to help empower people with epilepsy to live fuller lives, educate the public about the condition, and raise funds for research toward a cure. Evan Horowitz, director of the Center for State Policy Analysis (cSPA), is quoted on the impact of the Massachusetts millionaire’s tax in the State House News Service and is quoted in the Boston Globe on failed efforts by the state legislature to address flaws within the unemployment insurance system.
John Howard, lecturer in the Department of English, authored a hybrid creative and critical essay on magic realism in the Cincinnati Review titled “A Magical, Marvelous, or Fantastic Chronicle of Death Not Yet Told.”
Shafiqul Islam, professor of civil and environmental engineering, wrote two op-ed articles for the Daily Star: One about the crucial role that engineering diplomacy can play in effective disaster management, and the other about Bangladesh’s path to principled governance.
Ayesha Jalal, Mary Richardson Professor of History, was quoted in the Geo News article “77 years on, Pakistan’s journey from green and white to grey.”
Y. Natalie Jeong, periodontist and chair at the School of Dental Medicine, is quoted throughout the AOL article “Gum disease: causes, risks, prevention and when to see your dentist.” Jeong’s expertise was also recently featured in a Tufts Now article on oil pulling.

It demonstrates how presidents can overcome legislative checks by altering the traceability of their unilateral directives.

Farshid Vahedifard, professor and Louis Berger Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering, is quoted in a Boston Globe story on extreme heat and rail infrastructure titled “When it gets too hot in New England, here’s why you can expect train delays.” Additionally, Vahedifard was awarded a 2024 Senior Scholar Fellowship from Nanjing University in China. The fellowship supports exceptional scholars from outside China to visit the university on a short-term basis and conduct joint academic activities with students and faculty at the university in the spirit of international collaboration. Each year, only three internationally recognized scholars are awarded the fellowship.
