Claudia Mattos Avolese, Tanya Crane, Riccardo Giacconi, Ihnmi Jon, Lauren O’Connor Korb, Jenn Schmidt, and Mary Ellen Strom, all professors of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, were awarded SMFA Faculty Research and Travel Fellowships.
Denise Bates, dean of University College and professor of history in the School of Arts and Sciences, was named to the American Indian Policy Institute advisory board as part of the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
Hanan Bloomer, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and at the School of Medicine, was awarded an NIH F30 fellowship. His fellowship supports his work on triple-negative breast cancer and is entitled “Dissecting the Role of TRPV1 in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Innervation.”
Sarah Booth, director of the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts and senior scientist, was named president of the American Society for Nutrition for the 2024–2025 year.
Peter Brodeur, professor of medical education emeritus, was awarded a Dean’s Medal by Tufts University School of Medicine.
The following people are the 2024 recipients of the Natalie V. Zucker Research Center for Women Scholars Award: Carolyn Chlebek, postdoctoral research fellow at Maine Medical Center; Qiwen Dong, research associate in microbiology; Rachel Ende, postdoctoral scholar; Anna-Lisa Lawrence, postdoctoral scholar in microbiology; and Zhu (Jenny) Cui, clinical associate, all at the School of Medicine. The award was established through the generosity of Natalie Zucker to further the research careers of junior women scientists conducting basic and clinical biomedical research at Tufts or the major Tufts-affiliated hospitals. Awards are made to support specific research projects and to fund travel and training opportunities.
Kevin Clark, assistant professor of chemistry, received a Beckman Young Investigator Award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. Awardees exemplify the foundation’s mission of supporting promising young faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Alex Flynn, E26, competed at the 2024 Paris Paralympics as part of the U.S. Paralympic rowing team. Flynn was part of the PR3 mixed four with coxswain. Read more on Tufts Now.
Jason Hall, professor and Benjamin Andrews Chair of Surgery at the School of Medicine, was elected as a fellow of the prestigious American Surgical Association.
Katherine Hollander and Joshua Nguyen, both lecturers in the English department, received Peter Taylor Fellowships this summer at the Kenyon Review Adult Writers Workshops.
Catie Kean, A25, biology major, was selected as an Astronaut Scholar for 2024–25. This year, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation awarded more than 60 scholarships valued up to $15,000 to each selected scholar. Scholarship programming includes an Astronaut Scholar conference, mentorship, professional development, networking, and recognition. Kean has been conducting research since her sophomore year in the Mirkin Lab using yeast as a model organism to elucidate how length differences are generated in the repetitive DNA sequence RS3. These variations have far-reaching implications for human biology, physically and behaviorally.
Kareem Khubchandani, associate professor of theatre, dance, and performance studies, had his book Decolonize Drag named as a finalist for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Book Award.
Patti Klos, senior director of dining services, received the National Association of College & University Food Services’ highest honor, the Theodore W. Minah Distinguished Service Award. Klos’s career has spanned 35 years at Tufts, and she has also served as the NACUFS president since 2017.
Yi-Pin Lin, associate professor of infectious disease and global health at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded a National Institutes of Health grant to study birds carrying Lyme disease. The research will aid in the prevention of the disease’s spread from animals to humans.
Cathy Lu, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, was chosen as the 2023–24 Resident Artist for Harvard Ceramics. Lu’s ceramic works were on view at Gallery 224.
Anna Miller, senior multimedia producer in University Communications and Marketing, received a CASE Circle of Excellence Bronze Award in the category of Video-Student Audience (Long) for the “Step Behind the Scenes with BlackOut” video, which features Tufts’ BlackOut Step Team.
Eric Miller, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was honored as an International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance Fellow. AIIA fellows are committed to promoting the widespread application of artificial intelligence across diverse sectors.
Jessica Saab, production artist in University Communications and Marketing, had her work accepted into the juried show Too Hot! at the Kingston Gallery in Boston. The show runs through August 11.
Sima Samar, fellow at The Fletcher School, had her memoir, titled Outspoken: My Fight for Freedom and Human Rights, longlisted for the 2024 Moore Prize for Human Rights Writing. Read more about Samar’s story on Tufts Now.
Igor Sokolov, professor of mechanical engineering at the School of Engineering, and Katina Robinson, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the School of Medicine, were awarded a Women’s Health Innovation Grant, sponsored by the Massachusetts Life Science Center’s Women’s Health Innovation program. Their research is entitled “Novel imaging modality and image analysis to decrease the number of unnecessary colposcopies during screening for cervical cancer.”
Paul Sweeney, athletics communications specialist, was named one of three district winners in the 2023–24 College Sports Communicators Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. Katherine Yang, V25, was one of three veterinary students selected nationwide to present at this year’s Association for Clinical and Translational Science conference. She presented her research on canine osteosarcoma from her project as part of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s Student Summer Research Program.

The Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts has been awarded a 10-year, $1 million sustaining grant from Cummings Foundation’s $30 Million Grant Program. The grant will boost entrepreneurial education programming at the DEC. The $30 Million Grant Program awards $30 million to 150 nonprofits every year. Read more about this funding on Tufts Now.
The Tufts men’s lacrosse coaches won the “Coaching Staff of the Year” award, presented by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
The Tufts men’s rowing coaching staff earned the Division III Staff of the Year award from the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association.
The Office of Alumni Engagement received CASE’s Circle of Excellence Bronze Award in the Alumni Relations Initiatives category for its Alumni Professional Development Fund.

Tufts University Art Galleries received a $100,000 grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. This grant will support TUAG’s upcoming two years of programming, which take a curatorial approach of artistic research with, of, and for artists, students, and the Greater Boston community. Tufts Dining received a silver award from the National Association of College and University Food Services in the Residential Special Event of the Year for the Lunar New Year category for their dinner at the Dewick-MacPhie Dining Center on February 15, 2024.

Abe Bayer, doctoral student in the immunology program at the School of Medicine, and Pilar Alcaide, Kenneth and JoAnn G. Wellner Professor at the School of Medicine, are first author and senior author, respectively, on a newly published paper entitled “Cytotoxic T cells drive doxorubicin-induced cardiac fibrosis and systolic dysfunction.” The study was published in the journal Nature Cardiovascular Research and features additional contributions from researchers at the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Viking Bohman, doctoral candidate at The Fletcher School, co-authored a Politico opinion piece entitled “Final blow to Chinese ‘neutrality’ on Ukraine war.”
Alvin Camba, faculty affiliate at The Fletcher School, authored the East Asia Forum article “The Luzon Economic Corridor as the United States’ Southeast Asian litmus test.”
Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at The Fletcher School, authored a Foreign Policy article and was quoted in New York Times, India Today, Indian Express, and The Hill articles.
Benjamin Chrisinger, assistant professor of community health, authored an article for The Conversation entitled “Only 1.8% of U.S. doctors were Black in 1906 – and the legacy of inequality in medical education has not yet been erased.”
Jenna Clark, A21, doctoral student at The Fletcher School, Erin Coughlan de Perez, research director and Dignitas Professor at the Climate Policy Lab, and Bethany Tietjen, predoctoral research fellow at the Climate Policy Lab and Ph.D. student, authored “Progress and gaps in U.S. Adaptation policy at the local level” in the journal Global Environmental Change.
Alastair Cribb, dean and Henry and Lois Foster Professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, authored a spotlight article about the school’s infectious disease research in the American Journal of Veterinary Research. Cribb also authored a spotlight article for the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association entitled “Rethinking and re-envisioning a DVM curriculum.”
Maakwe Cumanzala, doctoral student at The Fletcher School, authored the Good Authority article “In Africa, gender equality in principle faces barriers in practice.”
Tom Dannenbaum, associate professor of international law at The Fletcher School, spoke to the Washington Post about what comes next in the International Criminal Court case over the Israel-Hamas war.
Alex de Waal, executive director of the World Peace Foundation at The Fletcher School, was interviewed for an Al Jazeera segment entitled “What will bring an end to the conflict in Sudan?” and an E-International Relations article to discuss his scholarship on famine and its relevance to the crisis in Sudan. de Waal also authored the Foreign Affairs article “Sudan’s Manmade Famine” and is quoted in the New York Times article “At Least 750,000 on Brink of Starvation and Death in Sudan, Experts Warn.”

Ryan Evans, principal service designer in the TTS Design Practice, and Jessica Sears, director of academic planning and accreditation in the Office of the Provost, presented at the Society of College and University Planners annual conference in Philadelphia this summer. Their talk, “Charting the Future of Education: Expedited, Experiential Strategic Planning,” presented a case study of how their teams engaged with the Tufts community over the past 12 months to develop an impactful and differentiating educational vision for the future of Tufts.

Sola Mahfouz, physics researcher, authored an opinion piece in The Hill about the 1,000 days of no school for girls in Afghanistan.
John McDonald, professor of music, gave a talk at the 2024 Biennial State Conference at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. The conference title reflected the title of McDonald’s music: “Week In, Week Out—A Teacher’s Journey,” which explores pianistic work-life concepts designed to engage the curious intermediate to advanced keyboard aficionado. Pianist Liam Greene performed McDonald’s new work at the conference.

Dariush Mozaffarian, dean emeritus and director of the Food is Medicine Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, was senior author on a new study entitled “Trends in Diet Quality Among U.S. Adults From 1999 to 2020 by Race, Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Disadvantage,” published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. Ethan Murrow, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, has a solo show opening at Winston Wachter NYC on September 5. Murrow has been commissioned for a new mural for the Broad Institute Clinical Labs, which will be featured in their new headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts. Murrow worked with two assistants who are SMFA alums, Nicolas Papa and Lei Zong, on the mural, which will be completed by the end of August. Murrow is also participating in two art fairs during the summer with Winston Wächter Fine Art (New York/Seattle). The fairs are Seattle Art Fair and the Intersect Aspen.

Farshid Vahedifard, professor and Louis Berger Chair in Civil and Environmental Engineering, spoke with Mongabay India about the amplifying feedback loop between drought and greenhouse gas emissions, referencing his research published in Environmental Research Letters in March 2024 entitled “Amplifying feedback loop between drought, soil desiccation cracking, and greenhouse gas emissions.” Vahedifard was also quoted in the Grist article “Taking a train during a heat wave? Daniel Drezner, professor of international politics at The Fletcher School, Alice H. Lichtenstein, Stanley N. Gershoff Professor of Nutrition Science and Policy at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and Karen Panetta, dean of graduate education and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the School of Engineering, have been named Distinguished Professors. The distinction is reserved for senior professors “who have made exceptional contributions to their disciplines, to their students, and to the university as teachers/scholars exemplifying the finest of Tufts’ traditions,” according to the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President. Zameera Fida, Thomas F. Winkler Professor of Endodontics and chair of endodontics, has been appointed as the director of the Post Graduate Program in Endodontics at the School of Dental Medicine. Fida had been serving in this role on an interim basis since January 2024.
Aikaterini Papathanasiou, professor at the School of Medicine, was named chair of the Department of Comprehensive Care. Papathanasiou has been the interim chair of the department since September 2023.
Hana Sadi, associate professor, has been promoted to director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at the School of Dental Medicine. Sadi has been at the school since 2005, starting as a PGY 1 and 2 general practice residency and chief, and completing a third year Fellowship in Advanced General Dentistry in 2008.
