Babak Moaveni, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was elected to the Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Membership grade of Fellow. Moaveni and the 2023 class of fellows were recognized during the awards ceremony at the EMI Conference in July.
Peter Neumann, professor of medicine, was appointed to the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Health Advisers for the coming year. The panel comprises widely recognized experts in health policy and health care.

Tufts Center for Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice is among the 11 recipients of the Massachusetts Attorney General Office’s maternal health equity grants.
Women’s basketball was named one of the 2023 Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Sport recipients. Grants were awarded to institutions to support collegiate women coaches on the rise, assist with living expenses, professional development, and mentorship. Tufts is one of 10 universities and colleges to receive the grants, which are designated for women coaching fellows in a wide variety of women’s sports.

Marcia Boumil, associate dean for conflict of interest administration and professor of public health and community medicine, and Paul Beninger, professor of public health and community medicine, discuss the repercussions of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action for medical school admissions and its potential adverse effects on the diversity of the physician workforce in this article in Science Direct.
Sean Cash, associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, along with researchers from the Center for Science in the Public Interest and New York University, authored a study in the journal Public Health Nutrition about third-party food delivery platforms and the lack of calorie disclosure, which is required by law. Authors of the study say that the Food and Drug Administration should clarify the rules so that calories are posted more consistently. Read more about this research on Tufts Now.
Cristóbal Cea, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, has work featured in The Endless Coup, a group show at NADA Gallery in New York City commemorating 50 years from the 1973 U.S.-backed military coup in Chile. In this group show curated by New Latin Wave, Cea is presenting the 3D animation Hawker Haunted, along with installations, performances, and mixed media works from many Chilean artists based in the United States, Chile, and elsewhere. He also opened his first solo exhibition, No Monsters No Paradise, at the Mills Gallery of the Boston Center for the Arts last month. The exhibition, consisting of 3D animations, paintings, and sculptures, is based on Cea’s research on monstrosity within the context and history of the Americas and will be on view until December 9.

Vickie Sullivan, Cornelia M. Jackson Professor of Political Science, had her essay entitled “Montesquieu on Slavery” included in The Cambridge Companion to Montesquieu, edited by Keegan Callanan and Sharon R. Krause and published in 2023.
Farshid Vahedifard, professor of civil and environmental engineering, Mohammed Azhar, School of Engineering graduate student, and Dustin Brown of Mississippi State University authored a study entitled “Overrepresentation of Historically Underserved and Socially Vulnerable Communities Behind Levees in the United States,” which was published in the journal Earth’s Future. Abay Yimere, postdoctoral scholar at The Fletcher School, discusses the risks to public health and infrastructure in Addis Ababa due to growing climate change risks like heatwaves, droughts, and severe flooding in a recent article published in The Conversation.
Chantal Zakari, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, recently produced an artist’s book, Pictures from the Outside. The accompanying exhibition opened at Kingston Gallery in Boston in August. Zakari was recently interviewed for this Lenscratch Magazine article.
