Damian K.L. Archer, assistant dean for multicultural affairs and clinical assistant professor at the School of Medicine, is the 2023 recipient of the Massachusetts Medical Society Grant V. Rodkey Award.

Erica Belvit, assistant manager of athletics equipment, branding, and operations, finished second in the hammer for Jamaica at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador.

Diana Chan, V24, and Jamie Wells, A20, V24, are among 18 students selected to receive the 2023–2024 AKC Dog Lovers Veterinary Outreach Scholarships.

Lenore Cowen, professor of computer science, was recently named a fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology for her leadership in the interdisciplinary field.

Deborah Donahue-Keegan, lecturer in education at Tisch College, has been selected to join the Project- Based Cohort of the Greater Good Science Center’s Bridging Differences in Higher Education Learning Fellowship for the 2023–24 academic year. This virtual learning community “is designed for higher education leaders who plan to launch or strengthen a specific initiative to bridge differences on college campuses in the 2023–2024 academic year.” Donahue-Keegan’s project will center on strengthening how the Social Emotional Learning for Equity and Civic Teaching (SEL-E-CT) Fellows program helps Tufts faculty/staff develop awareness, skills, and agency around bridging differences in and outside of the classroom across the university.

Alex Flynn, E26, has been named to USRowing PR3 Mixed Four at 2023 World Rowing Championships.

Jeff Foster, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science, received an Amazon Research Award for his work in automated reasoning.

Alexis Garretson, Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, is the 2023 Raskin Scholar. The Raskin Scholarship is an annual award made by Earth Science Information Partners to a current graduate student in the Earth or computer sciences who has an interest in community evolution of Earth science data systems.

Eleanor Kharasch, V25, and Courtney Wallner, V25, have been named as 2023 recipients of Veterinary Student Research Fellowships, sponsored by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges.

Yu-Shan Lin, associate professor of chemistry, is one of this year’s distinguished speakers at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Presidential Symposium on Machine Learning, which will take place at the fall national meeting of the ACS in San Francisco in August. The symposium features leading researchers in the application of machine learning to chemistry. Lin’s speech topic is “Overcoming the Structural Challenges of Cyclic Peptide Design with Machine Learning.”

Charles Mace, associate professor of chemistry, is the elected chair of a Gordon Research Conference, which will take place in June 2024.

Hannah McCarthy, a third-year veterinary student at Cummings School, has been selected to receive the prestigious Steve Marton Veterinary Student Scholarship from PetSmart Charities. The $50,000 scholarship is awarded to three influential veterinary students on the forefront of providing accessible veterinary care in under-resourced communities. Recipients were selected from applications submitted by second- or third-year veterinary students nationwide.

Kasso Okoudjou, professor of mathematics, was awarded a National Science Foundation grant for a project entitled “Collaborative Research: New perspectives from applied and computational time- frequency analysis.”

Lia Rotti, A23, is one of two student-athletes chosen to represent the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) for the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year honor, as well as the Division III Commissioners Association Women’s Sport Athlete of the Year award

Sarwat Salim, professor of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine and director of glaucoma services at Tufts Medical Center, has been elected to the American College of Surgeons Board of Regents.

Sam Sanker, director of development for the School of Arts and Sciences, was recently elected as president of the Planned Giving Group of New England (PGGNE) for the upcoming 2023–2024 year.

Brian Timko, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received a CAREER Award from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). 

Robert White, associate professor of mechanical engineering, was recently named a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. The prestigious society recognized his advancements in microelectromechanical systems.

Tufts Athletics finished second in the final standings for Division III in this year’s Learfield Directors’ Cup competition, which is made up of more than 400 colleges and universities.

Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, the Julia A. Okoro Professor of Black Maternal Health at the School of Medicine, spoke with WBUR about the need for health care providers to listen closely to Black patients, who often feel dismissed. Amutah-Onukagha, along with Jasmin Destany Kamruddin, M26, Fernando Ona, clinical professor of public health and community medicine, Dorcas Mabiala, researcher at the School of Medicine, Anthony Schlaff, professor emeritus, shed light on teaching about structural racism in medical schools in the Milbank Quarterly.

Stephanie Borns-Weil, assistant clinical professor at Cummings School, spoke with CBS News Boston for the article “Should dogs be allowed in stores and restaurants?”

Helen Boucher, dean of the School of Medicine, testified before the U.S. Senate on antimicrobial resistance. Read more about her testimony on Tufts Now. Boucher also spoke to WCVB about childhood vaccines and which ones children should receive routinely.

Arik Burakovsky, assistant director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at The Fletcher School, wrote “How Prigozhin’s Rebellion Exposes Putin’s Weakening Grip” for Time.

Francisco Carrillo-Salinas, research associate in immunology, Siddharth Parthasarathy, Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Marta Rodriguez-Garcia, assistant professor of immunology, were co-authors on a recent publication “Aging modifies endometrial dendritic cell function and unconventional double negative T cells in the human genital mucosa,” published in the journal Immunity & Ageing.

Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at The Fletcher School, wrote an article for The Conversation entitled “How will AI affect workers? Tech waves of the past show how unpredictable the path can be.” He also was quoted in the Week article entitled “Mark Zuckerberg vs. Elon Musk: a tale of the tech tape,” as well as in Washington Post articles: “Affirmative action ruling could be a blow to diversity in tech” and “Facebook to make its AI free to use, expanding access to powerful tech.” CNN quoted Chakravorti in an article entitled “With the rise of AI, social media platforms could face perfect storm of misinformation in 2024.” He also was quoted in a Marketplace article entitled “Artificial intelligence will impact workplaces and cost some workers their jobs.”

Mark Chase, lecturer in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, joined WBUR’s Radio Boston to share his thoughts on pedestrian safety, bike lanes, and traffic lanes in Boston.

Ying Chen, biomedical engineering research assistant professor, Edward Gordon, biomedical engineering research tech, Sara Rudolph, Ph.D. student in the School of Engineering, Brooke Longo, Ph.D. student in the School of Engineering, David Kaplan, Stern Family Endowed Professor of Engineering, and other researchers have found potential inflammatory effects of plastic particles using human intestinal organoids—small bundles of tissue made from a mix of human cells obtained from biopsies that mimic the complexity of an actual intestinal environment. Marie-Claire Beaulieu, associate professor of classical studies, authored an article in The Conversation entitled “What Greek mythology teaches us about women’s resistance and rebellion.”

Alice Connors-Kellgren, assistant professor of psychiatry, spoke with WCVB about the impact of social media on adult mental health.

Laura Corlin, assistant professor of public health and community medicine, is among experts quoted in the New York Times article about health impacts from the Canadian wildfire smoke that recently blanketed large parts of the eastern United States.

Alastair Cribb, dean of Cummings School, wrote about Dentistry Week and creating a partnership solution in a Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association article. He also authored a second article in the journal about clinical research at Cummings School. 

Dan Drezner, professor of international politics at The Fletcher School, is quoted in an Economist article (“The meticulous, ruthless preparations for a second Trump term”) and wrote an op-ed for Politico (“Why Kissinger Went to China—Again”).

Volodymyr Dubovyk, visiting professor at The Fletcher School, is quoted in a Vox article entitled “How bad will things get now that Russia has quit its grain deal with Ukraine?”

Rose Facchini, romance studies lecturer, published a translation of Diego Lama’s story “Cockroach- Eater” in ergot.

James Fisher, program administrator at Tisch College, recently authored a piece on the London School of Economics United States Politics and Policy blog about the problem of fake news and how a digital media literacy campaign could help counter it nationally. Fisher also authored a piece for the Wilson Center’s Africa Up Close blog about using music as a tool for peace building in Senegal ahead of the 2024 elections.

Brent Forester, Dr. Frances S. Arkin Chair of Psychiatry and Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine, is quoted in a New York Times article, about how to talk to someone with Alzheimer’s.

Marta Gaglia, adjunct associate professor in the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and collaborators authored “Cut site preference allows influenza A virus PA-X to discriminate between host and viral mRNAs,” which was published in the journal Nature Microbiology.

Kelly Sims Gallagher, dean ad interim and professor of energy and environmental policy at The Fletcher School, attended the U.S.-China Climate Finance Track II Dialogue hosted by the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy, Tsinghua University’s Institute of Energy, Environmental, and Economy, and the Beijing Green Finance Association. She also attended the second convening on China’s Cooperation with Southeast Asia to Support More Ambitious Clean Energy Transition by 2030 hosted by the Asia Society and Energy Foundation China. 

Nassir Ghaemi, professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine, spoke to the Washington Post about what triggers claustrophobia and how to overcome it.

Tarun Gopalakrishnan, Seth Owusu-Mante, and Bethany Tietjen, research fellows at The Fletcher School and Climate Policy Lab, discuss ways to address America’s housing crisis and climate change at the same time in an article in the The Conversation.

Satgin Hamrah, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History, co-authored and edited the book Contextualizing Sectarianism in the Middle East and South Asia: Identity, Competition and Conflict. Ayesha Jalal, Mary Richardson Professor of History,, Frank Sobchak, professor of the practice at the Gordon Institute, and Ibrahim Warde, adjunct professor of international relations at The Fletcher School, also contributed to the book.

Linden Hu, Paul and Elaine Chervinsky Professor in Immunology and vice dean for research at the School of Medicine, discusses the implications of the increasing spread of ticks and the disease-causing bacteria that they carry on PBS News. Hu is also quoted in an Inverse article about advances in Lyme disease vaccines and research, including his work in developing a new diagnostic test to help determine when individuals have cleared a Lyme infection. Hu’s research, which aims to better understand Post- Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS), is among five projects that will be awarded funding by the National Institutes of Health

James Intriligator, professor of the practice in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, authored an article in The Conversation entitled “Gliding, not searching: Here’s how to reset your view of ChatGPT to steer it to better results.”

Nisha Iyer, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, was featured in a Curiously Guided podcast episode reflecting on her Tufts course in which she uses popular sci-fi movies to explore foundational science and challenges and ethics in bioengineering. 

Michael Klein, William L. Clayton Professor of International Economic Affairs at The Fletcher School, is quoted in the Boston Globe article “Inflation Isn’t Dead Yet.” Klein also wrote an article for Econofact entitled “Banks, Credit Crunches, and the Economy.”

Maxim Krupskiy, visiting scholar in the Russia and Eurasia Program at The Fletcher School, authored an article for The Conversation entitled “Impunity over Wagner mutiny signals further degradation of rule of law in Russia.”

Vivek Kumar, assistant professor of medicine, discusses how he uses movement to study behavior in animal models of Down syndrome and autism in a Nature News article.

Jonathan Lamontagne, assistant professor of engineering, Shengwei Peng, EG23, and researchers from Penn State University authored “Effects of global climate mitigation on regional air quality and health” in the journal Nature Sustainability. The research was written about in a recent News Medical article.

Sung-Yoon Lee, assistant professor at The Fletcher School, had his book published in June in the U.K. by Pan Macmillan. Lee also joined ABC Australia to discuss the book, which is titled The Sister: The extraordinary story of Kim Yo Jong, the most powerful woman in North Korea. The book will be published in the U.S. in September by PublicAffairs.

Frank Lehman, associate professor of music, wrote a New York Times op-ed entitled “How to Write Music for Rolling Boulders.”

Cheryl London, associate dean for research and graduate education at Cummings School, appears in a recent episode of PBS’ Human Footprint, a science documentary series, in which she discusses how clinical trials could bring hope to other dogs and children with osteosarcoma.

Pavel Luzin, visiting scholar at The Fletcher School, is quoted in two Newsweek articles: “Videos Show Russian Boobytraps Left in Trees, Toys, Trenches” and “‘Storm-Z’ Convict Units Hinder Russian Offensive in Kupiansk Direction: ISW.”

Daniel Maxwell, the Henry J. Leir Professor in Food Security at the Friedman School and research director at the Feinstein International Center, and colleagues from Tufts and other institutions authored “Using the household hunger scale to improve analysis and classification of severe food insecurity in famine-risk conditions: Evidence from three countries,” which was published in the journal Food Policy.

Chris Miller, associate professor of international history at The Fletcher School, is quoted in a New York Times article entitled “‘An Act of War’: Inside America’s Silicon Blockade Against China.” Miller is the author of Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology, which was featured in a Tufts Now article.

Dariush Mozaffarian, dean emeritus of the Friedman School and distinguished professor, and Lu Wang, postdoctoral scholar, authored a new study about prescription produce programs, which was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. David Munson, M09, adjunct instructor at the School of Medicine, and Shantiera Taylor, M24, authored the first of a two-part review about health care of people experiencing homelessness, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine Evidence. Part two is slated to come later in August.

Maureen Murray, Tufts Wildlife Clinic director, authored a study entitled “Active metabolite of the neurotoxic rodenticide bromethalin along with anticoagulant rodenticides detected in birds of prey in the northeastern United States” in the journal Environmental Pollution. Zdenka Myslikova and Nate Dolton-Thornton, researchers at The Fletcher School, authored an article in The Conversation entitled “‘Global China’ is a big part of Latin America’s renewable energy boom, but homegrown industries and ‘frugal innovation’ are key.”

Tara Sonenshine, Edward R. Researchers at the HNRCA published the study “The human milk component myo-inositol promotes neuronal connectivity” in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
