Chantal Aaron, neuroscience Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, was recently awarded an International Behavioral Neuroscience Society (IBNS) travel award. Aaron is one of 17 graduate students in the world to receive the award. The travel awards are an integral part of the IBNS annual meeting, allowing qualifying members to attend and present their research.

Ivan Albino Flores, microbiology Ph.D. student at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, was named the 2022 recipient of the Andrew and Greta Wright Award. The award acknowledges Flores’ outstanding efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion based on his contributions to student recruitment at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists. The Andrew and Greta Wright Fund was established to enhance the graduate student experience in the microbiology department and was endowed by many Wright lab alumni.

Fletcher School students Pragya Handa, MALD22, Kathy Hu, MIB23, Riya Mehta, MIB23, Shruti Rao, MIB23, and Nino Sakvarelidze, MALD23, worked closely with UK-based startup Notpla, which won a 2022 Earthshot Prize. Handa, Hu, Mehta, Rao, and Sakvarelidze developed a seaweed packaging model—a sustainable substitute for plastic packaging—for Unilever’s Dove products with support from Notpla, which specializes in using plants and seaweed to design biodegradable packaging. Mitch McVey, professor of biology in the School of Arts and Sciences, and Pamela Yelick, AG89, professor and director of the Division of Craniofacial and Molecular Genetics in the Department of Orthodontics in the School of Dental Medicine, were named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest scientific society. McVey and Yelick join 504 other scientists, engineers, and innovators from 24 scientific disciplines who are being recognized for their scientific achievements. Read more on Tufts Now.

Ellen Pinderhughes, professor at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development, was awarded the 2023 Distinguished Contributions to Understanding International, Cultural, and Contextual Diversity in Child Development Award by the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD). Pinderhughes was recognized for her outstanding scientific contributions at the intersection of race, culture, and family context in national and international settings; for advancing our understanding of family behaviors in context, with particular attention to poverty, access to services, and social support networks; and for her leadership in organizing and facilitating opportunities for diverse scholars to share their work to further our understanding of international, cultural, and contextual diversity in child development. Pinderhughes and all of the 2023 SRCD Biennial Awardees will be honored at the SRCD member meeting and awards ceremony in Salt Lake City on March 23.

Alice Isabella Sullivan, assistant professor of the history of art and architecture, alongside colleague Julia Gearhart of Princeton University, won the Digital Humanities and Multimedia Studies Prize from the Medieval Academy of America for their work on the Sinai Digital Archive. The archive makes available for study, teaching, and research the vast collections of icons, manuscripts, liturgical objects, and archival material from the Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai. This collaborative digital project brings together for the first time the photographic archives from the Michigan-Princeton-Alexandria Expeditions to Sinai in 1956, 1958, 1960, 1963, and 1965, now held in the Visual Resources Collections at Princeton University and the University of Michigan.

Tufts University Art Galleries’ exhibit “Art for the Future: Artists Call and Central American Solidarities,” has been named one of Hyperallergic’s Top 50 Exhibitions of 2022. The exhibit drew on rediscovered archival materials from the Museum of Modern Art’s Library and explored the political artworks, films, poetry, performances, and actions created by participants in the formative 1980s transnational activist campaign “Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America.” The exhibit recently traveled to the University of New Mexico Art Museum.

Julian Agyeman, professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, and Natasha Warikoo, Lenore Stern Professor in Social Sciences in the Department of Sociology, and their colleagues co-authored an op-ed piece for CommonWealth Magazine titled “Gov. Healey’s opportunity to drive transformative change.”

Paul Beninger, associate professor of public health and community medicine, was appointed to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Developing a Framework to Address Legal, Ethical, Regulatory, and Policy Issues for Research Specific to Pregnant and Lactating Persons.

Sarah Booth, director of the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts, has been named to the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), which will make recommendations to the federal departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services as they update the Dietary Guidelines of America for its 10th edition. Emmanuelle Butty, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, and Mary Labato, V83, veterinary internist at the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals and Cummings School’s Anne Engen and Belle Professor in Clinical Nephrology, authored two papers published by the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The first study, titled “Outcomes of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicosis treated with therapeutic plasma exchange in 62 dogs” and published in September 2022, treated 62 dogs at five veterinary facilities from 2015 to 2020 for NSAID intoxication with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), which saved the lives of 98.4% of the canines. The second study, titled “Outcomes of 434 dogs with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicosis treated with fluid therapy, lipid emulsion, or therapeutic plasma exchange” and published in January 2023, concluded that intravenous administration of lipid emulsion and TPE should be considered in the management of severe NSAID toxicosis. Sean Cash, Bergstrom Foundation Professor in Global Nutrition and associate professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, and Wenhui Feng, Tufts Health Plan Professor of Health Care Policy Research and assistant professor of public health and community medicine, published their research “Dollar Stores and Food Access for Rural Households in the United States, 2008‒2020” in the American Journal of Public Health. The research found that more and more Americans are buying their food at dollar stores, especially people in in rural areas and households that are lower-income or headed by people of color. Shira Doron, GBS04, associate professor of medicine, has been named the chief infection control officer at Tufts Medicine.

Rose Facchini, lecturer in the Department of Romance Studies, published her translation of Diego Lama's Freedom [Libertà] in the speculative flash fiction magazine 365tomorrows.

Jennifer Ferguson, head of user experience and student success at Tisch Library, published an article on redesigning a first-year information literacy program during a pandemic in portal: Libraries and the Academy.

Kelly Sims Gallagher, academic dean and Climate Policy Lab director at The Fletcher School, spoke on the panel discussion on competition, innovation, and industrial policy for sustainable growth at the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development High-Level Symposium on Pro-Competitive Policies for a Sustainable Economy. She also served as an advisor on the Massachusetts Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2050 and the Secretary’s determination letter setting the statewide greenhouse gas emissions limit and sector-specific sublimits for 2050.

Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, director of Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tisch College, was quoted in the Education Week article “Gen Z Has a Passion for Political Activism. Schools Can Nurture It,” noting that the divide between who votes and is civically engaged and who isn’t is “influenced by quality of civic education, that’s also influenced by school climate.” Kawashima-Ginsberg is also quoted in The Washington Post article “What the Senate Ticketmaster hearing tells us about young voters” on the consistency and power of youth voters and how they are seeking to keep politicians accountable.

Samuel M. Gebru, senior fellow at the Center for State Policy Analysis (cSPA) at Tisch College, has been named professor of the practice of political science in the School of Arts and Sciences. While continuing his role at cSPA, where he is also convener of the Massachusetts Black Lawmakers Roundtable, Gebru has joined the faculty of the Department of Political Science and the Civic Studies Program. This spring semester, he is teaching PS118-03, Topics in American Politics: Decoding State Government and Politics. Gebru also joined WBUR’s Radio Boston to discuss what increased representation can mean and what inequities still remain in the Massachusetts Legislature.

Noorya Hayat, a senior researcher at Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tisch College, is quoted in the Christian Science Monitor article “Civics in the shadow of Capitol Hill: Letter from a D.C. high school.”

Eric Hegedus, professor and program director of the new Tufts University School of Medicine Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Phoenix, Arizona, was recently named to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s ad hoc committee to review epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence to make conclusions about the causal association between vaccines and specific adverse events.

Justin Hollander, A96, professor in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy, was a guest on Ireland’s national talk radio station, Newstalk, to discuss his new book The First City on Mars: An Urban Planner’s Guide to Settling the Red Planet. Read more about Hollander's book on Tufts Now.

Evan Horowitz, executive director of the Center for State Policy Analysis at Tisch College, is among the experts weighing in on WBUR’s “Charlie Baker wraps up 8 years as Mass. governor. Analysts ponder how he’ll be remembered.” Horowitz is also quoted in a Massachusetts legislative hearing on how to spend revenue generated from the recently adopted “Millionaires Tax” in the Boston Globe article “New tax on high incomes could generate at least $1.4 billion next year, state officials project.”

David Kaplan, Stern Family Endowed Professor of Engineering, was a featured guest on the People Behind the Science podcast episode “Using Science and Engineering to Create New Nature-Inspired Materials and Structures,” in which he discussed creating new, nature-inspired materials in the lab.

Andrew Kemp, associate professor in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences, contributed to the study “Implications of anomalous relative sea-level rise for the peopling of Remote Oceania,” which was recently published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The sea-level rise data that Kemp and the research team collected suggest some islands in Micronesia were possibly settled much earlier than supposed. Read more about the research on Tufts Now.

Peter Levine, associate dean for academic affairs and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship & Public Affairs, is quoted about the importance of young Americans being “informed and responsibly involved in politics and civic life” in a San Antonio Express News op-ed “We must empower voters of tomorrow.”

Deborah Linder, clinical associate professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, is quoted in the dvm360 article “A better diet and weight management starts with a delicate conversation,” discussing various approaches veterinarians can take to discuss the difficult discussion of pet weight management to clients.

Peter Love, professor of physics and astronomy and computer science, was awarded a grant from the Department of Energy to research nuclei and hadrons with quantum computers.

Helen Marrow, associate professor of sociology, saw her research with migration scholar Amanda Klekowski von Koppenfels referenced in The Washington Post article “Why have millions of Americans moved to these countries instead?” Marrow also recently published research in Social Psychology Quarterly that found that immigrants with darker skin tones perceive more discrimination. Nimah Mazaheri, associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science, had his book Hydrocarbon Citizens: How Oil Transformed People and Politics in the Middle East published by Oxford University Press.

Chris Miller, associate professor of international history at The Fletcher School, contributed his expertise to the BBC article “US-China chip war: America is winning.” Miller is the author of Chip War: The Fight for the World’s Most Critical Technology, which was featured in a recent Tufts Now article.

Dariush Mozaffarian, special advisor to the provost and dean for policy at the Friedman School, was quoted in the New York Times article “10 Nutrition Myths Experts Wish Would Die.”

Keith Nokes, H. Jack Geiger, MD, Director in Health Justice and assistant professor of family medicine at the School of Medicine, contributed to the research “A Community Partnership to Reduce Food Insecurity and Improve Patient-Reported Depression” published in the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst. The study suggests that nutrition program recipients who receive support through a community health-care partnership experience improved mental health outcomes.

Fiorenzo Omenetto, Frank C. Doble Professor of Engineering and director of the Tufts Silklab, led research into a biopolymer sensor that can detect bacteria, toxins, and dangerous chemicals in the environment and that can be printed like ink on a wide range of materials, which was recently published in the Advanced Materials article “Reshaping de Novo Protein Switches into Bioresponsive Materials for Biomarker, Toxin, and Viral Detection.” Read more about the research on Tufts Now.

Madeleine Oudin, Tiampo Family Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering, led research that was recently published in eBioMedicine titled “Potassium channel-driven bioelectric signalling regulates metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer.” The research investigated how manipulating potassium channel activity could alter those cells’ bioelectric signals—making the cancer less likely to spread. In the process, they determined that an FDA-approved anti-arrythmia drug, amiodarone, could alter cells in the same way. Read more about the research on Tufts Now.

Susan Parsons, professor of medicine and pediatrics at the School of Medicine, had her research into a new clinical prediction model for five-year survival in Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma featured in an article for the American Society of Clinical Oncology Daily News. The featured work is part of a recently funded research project grant from the National Cancer Institute.

Lorgia García Peña, professor and chair of the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora, had her book Translating Blackness: Latinx Colonialities in Global Perspective published by Duke University Press. Anthony Romero, professor of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, received two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kresge Foundation to launch the East Boston Spatial Justice Lab. This new research lab will attempt to understand and measure how the arts, advocacy, and cultural organizing for housing justice can strengthen East Boston residents’ social and emotional wellbeing and community’s healing and revitalization.

Clifford Rosen, professor of medicine at the School of Medicine, was quoted in a USA Today article about why doctors are struggling to identify treatments for long COVID.

Robert Sege, professor of medicine in the clinical and translational science program at the School of Medicine, has been re-appointed to a new term on the board of directors of the Children’s Trust. The organization serves as Massachusetts’ community-based child abuse prevention agency.

Lisa Shin, professor of psychology, and a team of researchers from Tufts, Massachusetts General Hospital, Duke, and the National Institutes of Health, published research into the biological origins of posttraumatic stress disorder titled “Exaggerated amygdala activation to ambiguous facial expressions is a familial vulnerability factor for posttraumatic stress disorder” in the Journal of Psychiatric Research. The research team found a marker that indicates vulnerability to the disorder and discovered that heightened activation in one particular brain region in response to seeing surprised and neutral facial expressions appears to be tied to developing PTSD. Andrew Stout, biomedical engineering Ph.D. student at the School of Engineering, discusses how scientists and entrepreneurs are envisioning a future of meat grown from cell culture rather than animals in a recent Science Friday segment “Lab-Grown Meats Are Finally Inching Closer To Commercial.”

Carolyn Talmadge, data lab services manager in Tufts Technology Services, shared the story of her success in developing and growing the geographic information system (GIS) course, a course required for students in the Master of Science in Conservation Medicine program at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Now in its eighth year, it is one of the most popular and highest-rated courses in the program.

Monica Duffy Toft, professor of international politics and director of the Center for Strategic Studies at The Fletcher School, wrote an article for The Conversation titled “US military spending in Ukraine reached nearly $50 billion in 2022 – but no amount of money alone is enough to end the war.”

Abay Yimere, a postdoctoral scholar in international environment and resource policy at The Fletcher School, was invited to the Second Dakar Financing Summit for Africa’s Infrastructure in Dakar, Senegal. He also wrote “Installing solar-powered refrigerators in developing countries is an effective way to reduce hunger and slow climate change” for The Conversation.

Fang Fang Zhang, interim chair of the Division of Nutrition Epidemiology and Data Science at the Friedman School, was quoted in The Washington Post article “The simple diet swap to help you lose weight and lower health risks,” in which she discusses her recently published research on trends in dietary carbohydrate, protein, and fat intake in the American diet.
