Senior Commencement Speaker and Wendell Phillips Award Nominations

Nomination Deadline: Wednesday, November 7, 2018, 5 p.m.

The Wendell Phillips Award was established in 1896 to honor Boston’s great orator and advocate for abolition and women’s and Native People’s rights. The award is given annually to a senior who demonstrates both marked ability as a speaker and a high sense of public responsibility. Selected by the Committee on Student Life, the winner is the one graduating senior invited to offer a speech as part of Commencement, and the speech takes place during the Baccalaureate Service. The speech is intended to deliver a social justice message for our time.

Faculty, staff, and students may nominate seniors to apply to be the Wendell Phillips Speaker, and seniors may self-nominate, by Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at 5 p.m. All nominated seniors will be informed by mid-November and will be invited to submit an application by Tuesday, January 22, 2019, including a letter of application, a resume of leadership and service activities, and a recorded speech. Applications will be reviewed by the Committee on Student Life (CSL), and the CSL will invite finalists to present brief speeches at an open forum on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at noon in Goddard Chapel. The CSL will then select the winner. This award also carries a modest cash prize. For more information, please contact or 617-627-3427.
