Over the past couple of weeks, Tufts has begun distribution of Alertus Desktop, our new desktop alerting software, to all university-owned and managed computers. This software, which was tested and evaluated during the TuftsAlert test on February 6, provides a new way for you to receive alerts directly on your computer.

Depending on the computer you use – Mac or Windows – you may notice the following indicating the software is running on your computer:

  • Windows – a yellow icon in the Windows system tray (bottom right)
  • Macintosh – a black concentric rings icon in the macOS menu bar (top right)

Alerts for any campus will be sent to desktop alerting software on all campuses. This is different from text, voice, and email, by which you’ll receive alerts only for your primary campus and subscribed opt-in campuses. Desktop alerting is one in an array of methods to spread critical information, and it remains important to keep your contact info up to date in TuftsAlert.

In a significant emergency the university will attempt to communicate with the community through a variety of methods. Use of the latest available technology provides us with several ways to reach community members through public postings, information hotlines, and an emergency alert system integrating telephone, text messaging and email.
