TO: Faculty and Staff, All campuses

With the acquisition of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts on July 1, Tufts now has two distinct Boston-based campuses serving different constituents—health sciences (in Chinatown) and the SMFA (in Fenway/Mission Hill). As such, it is important for us to distinguish between the two campuses when sending email announcements and alerts to faculty, staff and students on these campuses.

To make the distinction clear, we will refer to our Boston campuses as the “Boston-Health Sciences” campus and the “Boston-SMFA” campus. This naming convention will be used in safety alerts and Tufts Announcements emails, as well as weather-closing communications, which often need to convey time-sensitive, campus-specific information. In text emergency alerts, which have character limitations, we will abbreviate “Boston-Health Sciences” to “HealthSci” and we will continue to abbreviate the Medford/Somerville campus as “Medford” in such text alerts.

Since SMFA faculty, staff, and students are also affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences on the Medford/Somerville campus, safety alerts for either of these campuses will be sent to community members on both campuses. 

Please note that this new naming convention for our Boston campuses does not affect how we refer to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts for most purposes. This only changes how we distinguish between the two Boston campuses for certain internal and emergency communications.

TuftsAlert system

In a significant emergency the university will attempt to communicate with the community through a variety of methods. Use of the latest available technology provides us with several ways to reach community members through public postings, information hotlines, and an emergency alert system integrating telephone, text messaging and email.
